I have a Toshiba laptop(running vista)that is running slow, like it is on slow dail up. I ran the AVG free program and it found two of the Trojan Horse and a couple of other critical things.
Is there another software program I can run to have the computer back to normal.
Thanks

Vista? Seriously?

Do you have any data on it that you care about ? If so, save it off... And throw that hardware in the trash.

Even it it was running PERFECTLY, it's doubtful you have enough memory or CPU to perform decently doing simple tasks - primarily browsing the web.

Go get yourself a new machine. You'll thank yourself.

Never use anything advertised on TV.

Ccleaner has a "startup program" cleanup utility

Be careful cleaning your registry.

Does anyone use those PC Cleaner products that we see on TV? they make it sound so great, which automatically gives me cause to worry.....I'm well aware of the old adage "If it sounds too good...."

I agree that we tend to end up with lots of stuff that we don't ever use on the computer...and that stuff adds to slowing it down.

CCleaner is good. Especially for some simple registry cleanups.

You can also just type msconfig.exe into the search or run it from a run command, go to the start tab and turn off things you do not need in memory. If you don't know if you should turn it off (not start at startup) then google it or ask. Do not turn off something you are not familiar with. It may me important.

I turn off the startup of Itunes, Apple and Adobe. There are others but yo may not have them. Most programs, which you have installed, will not need to startup at startup. Some might though. There is no definitive, as each program has it's own level of necessity to you or itself.

You mentioned 'slow dial up' so is your problem your internet connection speed or just basic off-line operation? Maybe you could provide some details about your connection.

I'm using the RV Park wifi and it is fast. I think I got a virus thru an email.

Unload AVG. That along with Norton are memory hogs.
Try a control/alt/delete and look at the task manager and the processes tab. That will show you all the junk you have running in the background.

I've also use AVG for over 10 years. No such memory issues. In fact, AVG real time scanner indicates less than 6MB usage on my WIN 7. More like a memory piglet?

I also use CCleaner. It's free and will clean your registry also.

I frequently use Advanced system care and Glary Utility. Both are free. Also Crap Cleaner which is free as well. I use all three once a week.

I traded Norton for AVG years ago,, Been using AVG and Advanced SystemsCare ever since. Also will run Malwarebyte and Anti-malware when things start slowing down.

I do all of this on a scheduled basis on my DELL M90 running XP-PRO and not wait until things start slowing down...
