laptop volume with Netflix too low

We have a Lenovo ThinkPad and just started streaming movies from Netflix. The volume was so low you had to be two feet or less from the laptop to understand spoken dialogue. The volume on the movie and the laptop are turned all the way up (50). We have no volume problems with playing CD's or youtube. What are our alternatives?
  • Netflix is like that. I can't hear what they are saying so I turn it up, gets to an action scene and its way too loud. I can't watch it late at night anymore it wakes everyone up at home.
  • If you decide to add speakers, get some that are "self powered" meaning they have a little power brick plug and do not rely on the laptop for power. They will provide much better sound and volume levels.
  • I just looked in "my computer" and found the system sounds screen and the sound was only half-way up so I turned it all the way up and will try that. Thank you all for the quick replies. I'll look for some stereo speakers as well so we can increase the quality as well.

I picked one of these Radio Shack 40-1441 PC speakers that runs on D-CELLS... They pretty neat to have around... Plugs into any PC or CELL PHONE speaker jack... Great quality sounds too... This was several years back so don't know if they are still carried by Radio Shack or not...
