Mac voice recognition software ?

A friend wants to 'dictate' to his two Mac computers
I ask him for the OS version, so I could check on this
But he hasn't got back to me
Just guessing from previous conversion, that he inherited them and they are pre 2009
This part is just a guess, could be older
Reasonably sure they are not newer
Won't know until he gets back to me with the info
I can explain it to you.
But I Can Not understand it for you !

It's actually built into the OS - at least in the Sierra OS. Press the FN key twice rapidly and the dictation dialog box should pop up.

I have an early 2008 Mac laptop and have used the voice recognition software. It works well for small stuff, but is not fast enough to do dictation. It will fill in blanks in forms, but it waits for a complete sentence or a pause in the voice to do its thing, and a long passage will cause it to choke.
