Media players & VLC download for Win7 Desktop

I have 3 media players. The MKV file player, I downloaded and mPlayer
version 1, which has not worked very well. And Of course Win media player, on my Win7 PC. I'm think I should uninstall MKV and mPlayer.
Then download VLC:http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html

Has anyone else done this and had it work. I want to be able to play
all different files types. Any other suggestions are also welcome.

The only Codec I have found that VLC doesn't play "well" with is H264 HD files which my HD camcorder creates. In my case part of that is my video card does not have good enough GPU on board and simply relies on the main processor to decode the file instead. H264 files require a min of dual core processor at 2.2ghz PLUS a newer video card with top quality GPU..

VLC IS my main "go to" media player.
  • I primarily use VLC Player. It comes with its own codecs so will playback almost any media format. We even use VLC at some well known DC museums I work with, as its highly configurable at can play back video files full screen with no on-screen display. It can also be set to pause on the last frame, so no chance of seeing the PC/Mac desktop if used for a public screening.

I also personally use the KMPlayer which also installs its own codecs. It actually works better in some instances, such as with a looped A-B playback region. Whereas VLC can fail to do so with some interframe(mp4) file formats. Just be aware, KMPlayer will install third party adaware unless careful.

  • i use VLC
    and
    media player classic
    or
    media player home cinema

    i almost never use WMP

personally i dislike MKV files and will not bother with them

its personal, i have found that MKV's that play on ONE PC are a real PITA on a different PC
