Memory Card Recovery??

On our recent trip, when using a new digital camera, mt wife pushed the wrong menu selection on her new digital camera and erased all of the photos she had taken, I immediately turned the camera off and removed the SDHC card and replaced it with another. Is there a way to recover these erased photos? Is there a free or low cost software program that will accomplish this task or have the photos been lost forever?

Glad OP was able to recover the files..

A program called UNDELETE360 was what I used several years ago to recover my nieces photos after she dropped her camera in the ocean and when she thought she had it dried out it immediately started deleting all the files when she put batteries back into the camera..

It is FREE and it worked very well.

As any recovery program goes, you MUST avoid adding any new files to the media until you run the recovery program.

That is due to the fact that new files MAY overwrite the files you wish to recover.

That's not the fault of the camera, it's either bad cards (not likely with 3 of them), or you are formatting them on a PC. Only use the camera to format the cards.

I'm sorry to hear about your problem. It can be really frustrating to loose your photos. I've used software to recover some of mine after a hard drive went bad. I didn't manage to get all of them, but I did recover most. The information is still on the card, but the file allocation table now tells the software that it's okay to reuse the space that they occupy. Even inserting the card into a drive could potentially write over some of the photos. Most PC repair services, like Geek Squad, have software to recover lost data.

I'm a professional photographer and have shot several weddings. I have gotten into the habit of making two backups of all my photos. I keep one set on the card and have multiple cards. I download them to my laptop to edit them, and then I make DVD copies of the original and the edited versions. It increases the workload, but I've had disks go bad and cameras stolen or destroyed by the TSA and it's been worth the time to make backups.

Normally only the "index" is erased, the files are not, so if you took the card out straight away you will be able to recover... Perhaps more than you want.

Fry's. Best Buy,, Staples (may) and many other stores. both computer and photography may be able to do it for a fee.

I have never used the recovery programs on a SD card but have used a few on HD's (Same situation) and the results were good. But it's been like 20 years since I did that.

I've used Photo Rescue to recover deleted images as well as "rescue" corrupted data cards. They have a trial version that can be used to see if it will work with your problem.

Call a small computer repair shop. They may have the software to do it. Pctools was a program I used for years to recover those files. Do not mess about and try to do it yourself. Let someone that knows how to do it. It probably won't cost much.
