Radio wiring ... Always hot?

When I bought my class C the radio was powered through the coach and would not work if the cutoff switch was off.

When I had an Alpine unit installed to replace it I discovered they wired it to the ignition switch so I had to have that on to use the radio even when parked.

I am going to replace the Alpine unit soon and am wondering what is best? To have them power it from the cab battery with an always hot wire so the ignition does not have to be turned on or go back to the coach battery connection. Either way I will have to make sure I turn the radio off when done with it.

Would the radio cause any drain on the battery when turned off? I pull the coach battery during winter storage but leave the cab battery in.

Appreciate any and all tips or suggestions.
  • Winnebago wired mine both ways. I have a switch on the dash. One way the radio is on the chassis battery. The other way it is on the house battery. I can choose what I need.

Of course, if I have it set to the house battery, then hit the battery disconnect, I lose all of the presets.

The standard for CARS and small trucks is to hook to the ignition so it turns off when you shut down.. of course in Motor homes.. Not always the best idea.

The best idea is a SPDT toggle switch.

In one position it's a "Car Radio" and runs off the chassis system via the ignition switch ACC lead

In the other position it's a HOUSE radio

If the switch is also a CENTER OFF type. Well you know what the center does (OFF)
  • Wire it to the house battery. Use a dpdt switch inline, use one side for the hot wire and the other for the memory power feed. Turn it on when camping and off when storing.
  • there Is a small parasitic drain for the radio's memory functions
its there even If you don't have any 'set' stations

i would wire it to the House battery
  • our dash radio has an A/B switch allowing it to be powered by either the chassis battery or house batteries. if I had to choose one or the other i'd go with the house battery. while underway your house batteries are being charged by the alternator and while parked your house batteries can be kept charged.
  • If the radio is off there would be no battery drain. If the radio is located in the coach I would wire it to the coach battery, if in the dash I would wire it to the ignition.
