This happens often in RV's. if the unit is active then every few days it re-downloads an authorization, if it misses a download or two no problem but if it goes too long,, It can no longer decode the new authorization.
The authorization also comes with new codecs, codes and such used to un-encrypt the TV signals. Each authorization/update packet comes with enough codes for the next few weeks,, but if you leave it off too long, the last codec will be too old and thus you need to call DirecTV and have them send you a master pack,, This is encrypted with your ESN, and basically uses the "Out of box" codecs (which the receiver never forgets) to reset it to current set.
Why do they do this?
In my storage space is a CoolSat 500, This is basically useless now days and never did work with DirecTV but I used to get SOME services with it, It is a multi-band (C and KU) receiver capable of receiving Dish, Direct, Bell Shaw, and C-Band stuff.. Given the proper programming, alas, That was when it was new, The unit can not accept the proper programming today.
I used to use it to watch NASA channel, which is not encrypted.
But there is a newer model that can do dish, And the one I have can be modified to do DirecTV and back in I think 2006 (or 7) There was a man at Quartsite selling the very model I have, along with a CD, you mixed 'em up with your computer and you had all the Dish Channels for free (Well, 500 bucks he charged) for about a week till the codes changed. (Oh, he left in the company of a couple of official looking gentlemen and he was wearing a lovely matched pair of stainless steel braclets from what I heard, They also took his entire inventory).
There is a constant battle between Dish, Direct and the other Sat providers and the pirates. This is why the encryption.
Oh, if anyone needs a sat aiming device, that coolsat is kind of good at it,, about all it's good for now days, but it can aim a dish as easily as a Dish receiver. (And Dish is as good as professional sat finder meters like the Bird Dog). (And it cost way less than a BD too)
