Sad news for high data users on Verizon UDPs

Verizon's sad news for some Unlimited Data Plan users.

Verizon has a unique problem in the bid they used to secure the bandwidth for their LTE data prohibits them from throttling users. ATT, T-Mobile and Sprint do not have any limitations. If you look at the fine print on all of those unlimited plans they will throttle users past 22GB per month. This allows those providers to slow down users who consume a lot of data to allow other users to consume. Since Verizon can't do that it really does wreak havoc on their network.

However there are still companies that will allow you to purchase a UDP data plan from Verizon. They have phone numbers and you assume the liability of the phone number along with the UDP.

Though I agree that Comcast and Verizon are different companies.

Comcast did this about 15 years ago give or take a couple as I recall.

That is why they other poster said "Comcast Thing" It was not well received at the time and likely will not now.

Since I do not have Verizon due to their Cuss-some-more service on their land line and other accounts I've experienced and observed in the past. I am not affected.

My provider keeps increasing my data plan by adding Unlimited this, and Unlmited that and Unlimited other things. Getting so nearly none of my data use is metered.

Folks are comparing the hidden data limits that Verizon uses to the hidden data limits that most of the hardwired landline providers have. Comcast has used them for years.

Verizon is now working to get rid of their "unlimited" users, and this is their method. Their CEO was just out saying that they can't make any money while they have "unlimited" data plans out there. Of course, other carriers ARE, and he is retiring in a few months, so we may see an about-face from Verizon then.

Verizon is also cracking down on folks that were using the T1114 routers with "unlimited" plan SIM cards. They are sending letters to them that they need to use a supported device or get cancelled.

As for what constitutes excessive data - that's why all of these limits are hidden/flexible. The carrier can say it's whatever they want it to be. In this case, it looks like Verizon is using 100BG as their number for the moment.

As a full-time homeschool/roadschool family with no satellite or cable TV, our usage ran from 300GB to 400GB a month using Comcast cable internet while stationary. That includes everything - e-mail, web surfing/research, me working from home from time-to-time, and streaming video. They never said anything about it. Same with Cox in Las Vegas where the usage was the same.

Right now, we have a plan with T-Mobile (prior to T-Mobile ONE) that gives us unlimited data on the phones (2) and 7GB per phone of tethering. We also have a Z-917 hotspot that gives us 22GB of high-speed data and unlimited reduced speed after that. We plug the Z-917 into our Asus RT-AC66U router and all devices can use it, likewise we can plug the android phones into it and use the 7GB per phone as well.

We have found that using apps on the phone for Netflix, PLEX, and other video applications and the Smart View streaming feature on the phone to a Roku connected to the TV with screen mirroring turned on, we can get "good-enough" quality. That leaves the Z-917 and the phones for everything else.

Unlimitedville is back - to a point - and has a 150/month unlimited T-Mobile plan and a 250/month unlimited Verizon plan. I've been trying to get more details from them. They indicate that folks often exceed 300GB with no issue, but we haven't had a chance to test that.

This is about Verizon Wireless. Taint' got nothing to do with Comcast, Google Fiber, or any other landline provider.

This doesn't seem to apply to Grandfathered 3G plans. From what I can tell, VZ is going after 4G smartphone plans that were marketed as "unlimited" but also had an excessive use clause built in.

Verizon has forced us to remain in a grandfathered unlimited 3G data plan not allowing us to upgrade to 4g without going into a data plan. We still use 80 to over 100 gbs a month of data. So I'm guessing they with also use this to force us out of our unlimited 3G plan. Glad we decided to improve our coverage as fulltime RVer's not long ago by switching our phones and tablets to AT&T unlimited data by bundling with DirecTV. So now if we lose our Verizon MiFi 3G unlimited we have a fall back plan.

I would say a non issue until it is determined what they define as extraordinary

As of right now, we do not know what an โ€œextraordinaryโ€ amount of data is. Are we talking 25GB per month? 50GB? 300GB? Weโ€™ll be sure to let you know if we find out.

First Comcast, now Verizon have secret shadow numbers. When the customer crosses the secret data number they are warned. It may be the first or only warning. Comcast has played the data cap game for years. The number seems to change with the market (city). Comcast claims there are no data caps until the customer violates the data cap. Makes no sense. Verizon appears headed in that direction. No hard numbers.

Other companies have pulled similar shenanigans. Comcast was an easy comparison against Verizon.

This seems like a Comcast thing. No details on what qualifies for excessive data. I average 30-40gb per month. Is that too much? No data sharing. No tether. I pay full price for the phone to stay within the Verizon Guidlines. Google Fi looks better and better.
