How could Good Sam sponsor the today show last week and on the program they kept referring to parks as national parks that are not IE White Sands and Alcatraz they should have said the two were run by the National Park ServiceThere are 59 National Parks with 47 being in the lower 48 states

All kinds of things of national merit, including historic sites, national monuments, national memorials, historic trails, national recreation areas, and, of course, the national parks. All of these are run by the NPS, part of the Department of the Interior. The NPS has some places that are run in conjunction with tribal agencies. This listing does not include the wilderness areas, national monuments and other protected areas run by the BLM, Department of the Interior. The largest portion, though, is simply public land, much of it leased out to ranchers and others for cheap.And, of course, there are the national forests, run by the US Forest Service, part of the Department of Agriculture.:)Lynn

I think they just linked parks and monuments in the group i.e. like you said anything run by the national park service. There is some other stuff going on this year with National Parks on the Air. Hams operating withing the parks to sponsor the anniversary.

There a lot of "National" sites that have nothing to do with the National Park service. They jut use the name national in their title, and usually have a small-type disclaimer that they have no connection to the NPS. CW doesn't have anybody that knows the difference. I would not be suprised to see them advertised as a "National" RV sales and service store.

They're not speaking to us, they're speaking to people who have never visited and therefore won't know the difference. "National Park" is being used as a generic term here. All the variations would get confusing to the uninformed; they don't want them to be confused, they want them to visit.

having visited 53 of the National Parks so far I too thought it funny, but, even the NPS has been calling all facilities Parks, just not all are called National Parks. A slight difference but a difference none the less. I don't the that the NPS cares if they are called National Parks just as long as we all find OUR park(s).

I agree with you rr2254545, some people consider parks as national parks but there is alot of difference between national parks and parks.

In some Junior Ranger literature I recently read online, John Muir Woods, Point Reyes, and I believe Alcatraz were all called National Parks. I was rather confused by that at first but figured they called any park under the NPS a National Park. ??

You may still be confused.
All national forests and some national monuments are NOT run by the NPS. The National Forests are in The Department of Agriculture and run by the U.S. Forest Service. Completely different agency, different govt. Department, and different mission from the National Park Service and Department of Interior. While NPS manages most National Monuments, others are managed by USFS, F&WS, BLM, Dept Of Defense, and even NOAA.

The word "park" has a variety of definitions, including "an area designed for a specified type of use (as industrial, commercial, or residential use) ". In the case of a place like Alcatraz, being that it's a preserved historical site it certainly seems to fit this aspect of the definition of "park".

Every National Monument I've been to also has a park or park like grounds associated with it. So I agree with the lumping/linking theory
