Which Dish for DTV With Genie?

We just finished up 3 weeks of camping. I ran a two LNB 18" dish through a SWM and then a single wire to the back of the genie. kinda neat set up but I could not get the "real deal" HD and of course channels like Velocity which is HD only.

I have a slimline three dish at the stick home and have seen some folks take that thing along in a camper - kinda large and cumbersome to my thoughts.

My question is. Is there a smaller dish that will bet me the same service as the slim line 3 while on the road. Space is limited in the basement of the fifth wheel. thanks.
  • Thought I owed an update. We are back from our 7 weeks out this winter. As my dad used to sway ("that slimline 3 and the Genie are the berries")

I bought the roof mount one from amazon because it was the most economical. For the lnb arm I bought three 1/4 inch thumb screws for mounting. I could not find ones that big with as flange on them so i bought long enough ones and spun a nut down on them for the flange. it took little time to screw the lnb arm on.

My challenge was a mast of the correct diameter. So one day i was in the VFW complaining and the guy next to me (Jim) said he had one of those things that he had to dig up from his yard because DTV would not do it. Two beers later, i was in hog heaven with the correct diameter mast.

I found a tripod at Radio Shack.

beaming in the sat was a piece of cake. usually hit some beeps and went from there on the first swing.

Thanks for all the meaningful/good input.

Dave, I have a slimline 3 that was pretty cheap. Bet if you saw a service truck in the area they would give you a good deal on one. As far as cumbersome, I just use a cordless drill with a socket on it and remove the LNB arm. Takes seconds and is easy to store.

I do something similar. I havea tote that the LNB, the arm, coax cables and tools fit into. Then the dish and tripod are taken apart and stored. They usually go on top of other stuff in my basement. Take up little space.

  • A Slimline dish is much easier to store with a foldable lnb arm. Get a conversion kit at tv4rv.com
  • You need an oval dish with either a SL3 or SL5 LNB. Of course then you will need to complete the SWM system with a power supply and splitter. I have a roof mounter automatic Winegard trav'ler but I also carry my oval dish and tripod for those occasions. Smart money just sets up the RV to match what you have at home. A lot less hassles that way.
