How is it a pain to get the the desktop? A single click at boot time is all it takes. With 8.1, that single click will be eliminated.
I don't care for Metro apps (there's no such thing as a Windows 8 app) because they want to run full screen and are very simplistic in nature so I continue to use the software in Win 8 that I used in XP and Win 7. I haven't needed to purchase a single new piece of software.
Win 8 boots & shuts down faster and is supposed to be more secure. I don't think there's enough of an improvement to warrant upgrading a computer currently running Win 7 but I wouldn't (and didn't) hesitate to buy a new computer with Win 8.
