Win 10 - finding Removable Hard Drive?

Back in the old days with Win 7 I just clicked 'my computer" and the drives popped up.

I got roped into Winn 10 and now have what i think is an embarrassing question.

If i stick a Thumb Drive/SD card out of a camera in the computer slot, how or what do I do to access that drive/card? :S

thanks

Thought I owed and update.

Thanks for all the help. i finally threw in the towel and took it to the local geek shop. he said it needed a driver and he installed the correct one.

So Now i can pull up the SD card and view and use the pictures.

however i cannot delete any pics on this computer and if i try a few times it usually causes something that necessitates the computer being shut down by the forced mode.:S

So for now i am OK since the DW doesn't like the computer being gone. i just use the laptop to do the deleting on SD cards.

Now that i have been converted to Win 10 the system is not recognizing that i have a SD card stuck into the drive. It only shows the C drive and the CD/DVD

:S i can see another 100 buck flush going in on this issue.

maybe someone could have a suggestion that this ole puter guy could understand and orchestrate?

thanx

Can you see it in device manager but not in explorer? That was the case for me. It was fixed by allowing a user admin privileges. To do that you must turn admin privileges on. Google how to do that.

On my computer in teh quick-start tray is a file folder. This is "My Computer" of old..

Clicking on it brings up a pair of frames. Right frame is what Microsoft things we want to see the most or the folders we use the most (not sure which) and below that (Scroll down) is "Recent documents and files".. very useful

in the LEFT frame there are a bunch of options. ONe Drive, Drop box and THIS COMPUTER

Click on THIS COMPUTER

And you are where MY computer used to take you in one step

Does this help.. Your removable drive, (For example my cell phone) will now be in the Main frame... As is my CD/DVD RW Drive and the computer's internal Hard Drive. If you need screen shots.. advise and I'll snap some and mark them up for you. In fact.. I will see attached if it attaches.

You may need to expand the photo (Drawing) a bit to make it visible but there are 3 screen shots on one 8.5x11 page.

If you haven't changed the name, click on 'this pc' and it might solve the problem. It shows my older Sansa clipsport where filemanger doesn't see it by where the c and d drive shows up. This might be a solution for the OP also.

Strolling, it was a Rocketfish enclosure with an IDE drive in it and my other Win 10 machine also populated it as a USB controller and not an external storage device. I had no idea west was on the drive but a new WD Passport drive showed right up.

I had the same problem with my external hard drive that I use to backup the computer. I Googled the problem and found a suggestion to change the letter of the hard drive and to verify the path.

In order to use device manager to do that I had to have administrator privileges. I created another user with those privileges and Win 10 said it had them but it didn't. It turns out that Win 10 is delivered with the ability to create users with administrator privileges disabled. One has to get into DOS and give some commands to turn the ability on. I forget what the commands are but Google will provide them.

Once I had real administrative privileges the computer (I think, it is hard to remember exactly) recognized the hard drive with no further action on my part. So, perhaps, creating a user with admin. privileges will solve your problem.

I spent two weeks in Win 10 hell and ultimately did a fresh install of Win 7 and and my programs.

Windows 10 can recognize all the same format/partitioning schemes that previous Windows versions could so there shouldn't be any reason why a drive needs to be reformatted specifically to work with Windows 10. It's possible that the drive's contents got scrambled and needed to be reformatted before ANY OS would recognize it. Did you try it on another computer and did it work there but not with the Windows 10 computer.

The simple answer is that it works exactly the same way in Windows 10 as with previous versions of Windows. Inserting a removable drive or a memory card SHOULD show as an additional drive in File Explorer.

If the removable drive doesn't appear in File Explorer, then you have a problem with your system.

You can actually place a "This Computer" icon on your desktop like the old "My Computer" icon on earlier versions of Windows.

I just click on the windows ICON in the bottom left corner and select 'THIS PC'

My main screen is setup like WIN7 with small icons down the left side side and a task bar on the bottom. The main screen is a screen saver scenes from my colletcion of DARK NIGHTS...

Everything here looks like my old WIN 7 machine but this one screams speed wise...

Most often the SD details will open in a window upon insertion of the SD or USB drive into the computer. If it doesn't come up, click on the file fold icon in the bottom taskbar. The details of your computer files will come up. Click on the drive letter for your SD and you can see and access the files.
