Win 7,Firefox help

Last year I got a new computer with Windows 7.One of the things I dislike is,if I am reading a news story, I use the down arrow to scroll from the top to the bottom. But sometimes when I hit the arrow, the page just flies to the bottom. Then I have to scroll up and start over again. Is there anyway to fix this?I didn't have this trouble with my other versions of windows.Or maybe the problem isn't with windows but with something else. I usually use Firefox as my web browser. When I am finished with a website,I hit the X to close it out like I always did.But now, many times when I go to open up a new web page, the previous story pops up instead. No matter how many times I close it,it comes back up.The only way I can bring a blank page up is to minimize the last page and then a blank page comes up.I have looked ay my Firefox settings and I have it clicked to always start with a new page but that hasn't helped.Any suggestions would be appreciated.
  • I've tried everything you guys suggested. But still, when I close a tab or multiple tabs, sometimes one of the pages keeps showing up when i try to open a new tab.The only way I can get a new tab to come up is by minimizing the page and then a blank page will open. And the mouse issue is still there.I did go to the control panel and tried making changes but the same thing still happens. When I go to hit the down arrow, sometimes the whole page just flies down.the I have to scroll back up.
  • I am on Win 7 and Firefox right now. The keyboard down arrow moves the page one line per key press. Hold the key down and it scrolls down the page. The scroll bar on the screen does the same thing - one mouse click one line, hold the mouse button down and it scrolls down line after line. I never set anything special but Win 7 has very customizable mouse features. Just open the mouse menu in the Control Panel and adjust it to move pages any way that you want it to.

As to clicking an X to close a webpage - just set Firefox to open a new webpage when you enter a new URL in the current tab. It will just go and open a new webpage and the old one is gone. FF keeps playing with their tab feature which is a pain in the a - if you want more than one webpage available on different tabs you can set to do that too.
  • If you click precisely on the arrow it will scroll more slowly than if you click slightly above it. Make sure you are clicking directly on the arrow and not on the white space above the arrow.
  • When I refer to the up and down arrow,I mean the one that's to the right of the page, not the one on the keyboard. So when I left click with the mouse on the up and down arrows, this is where the problem sometimes occurs.
  • I assume by "down arrow" you're referring to the arrow at the bottom left of the open page. Perhaps you're missing the arrow and hitting above the arrow. This will cause a page down instead of a scroll down.

Oops, I meant the "Bottom Right" of the page, not the bottom left.

Are you trying to open a new instance of Firefox when you have issues or opening a new tab?
  • RGar974417,
On my HP laptop, the up and down arrow keys share Page Up and Page Down. A key press of just the up or down key results in one line movement; if I hold down a special "fn" key and then press the up or down arrow key the result is a page movement. Could your issue result from something like this?
  • OP, You sure the issue is not related to your inadvertently hitting the scroll wheel on your mouse. Check your mouse settings for fine tuning scroll, etc..
  • The 'F5' key will refresh the contents of any webpage in Firefox. Try that if it is not updating automatically.
There may be an option to always refresh when you load and that is what mine does, but I don't immediately see one.
If you look under options (click on the three horizontal lines just under the x button top RH corner to close Firefox and then click on the options icon) and then the advanced tab there are a couple of options for how the scrolling works. Try it till you get what you want.
