Hello and thanks to all in advanceI am a proud owner of a F-150 and need to put install controllers, is this fairly straight forward? I already have the electrical in the back but just need to purchase the device. Could I purchase the device on Amazon and have a local RV company install it? or should I just have the RV place take care of the purchasing and install? Any good brands? Could I install the device myself?Thank you and I will have many follow questions to come!

If you are somewhat handy it's relatively easy to install a brake controller...Buy a controller (I like Prodigy) and order a wiring harness that is specific to your truck..Consider going with etrailer. They will have everything you need and have a great customer service outfit that can help you. They also have videos on their site that show how to install a brake controller..etrailer Link...HERE

What year F-150? Beyond newer trucks that have the controller installed, there were trucks that have the controller wiring either with a connector or bundled under the dash for easy installation. If you search through the Tekonsha website (makers of the Prodigy brand of controller and supplier of connecting hardware), installation instructions will be listed. It's a fairly easy installation if you have experience with wiring. If not, any auto or truck repair shop can install the controller.

Since 1997 Ford has made it installing an electric brake controller relatively easy. I installed one in my 2003 F-150 in under 10 minutes. I recommend the Tekonsha P2 and vehicle specific wiring harness for under $150 total. You may need some relays in the distribution box as well. Etrailer offers reasonable prices and great customer support for the products they sell.

It's easy IF your F150 has the factory tow package.If not, then it's complicated.

You should be able to get the tekonsha harness for your truck, plug it into the p3 then plug it into the truck. The wire harness in the glove box requires splicing which you can do if you like.

Yes you can do that. I spent the $10 for the vehicle specific harness so I didn't have to splice/solder wires.

With the bag that included that harness in your glovebox, there probably are a couple relays that need to be added to your distribution box. One is to make the trailer brakes work, connect from the brake controller output to the 7-pin harness at the back of the truck. The other relay is to charge the trailer battery while connected.

So i've attached my progress thus far. I purchased the P3 and located the tow package wiring from glove compartment. My question is, do I just link the two sets of wires and plug in then the plugs to their perspective housing? The black plug to the P3 and then the grey plug under the dash of the F150? Seems straight forward but just really want to triple check with you guys? Thank you so much and please pass along your wisdom. My family and I really appreciated! I hope the link/picture works

I really don't think I want to trust the safety of my $50,000 trailer to a $50 controller.

Agree. A time based controller. WILL activate the brakes a few second AFTER the accident.
