Four wheel down towing

Trying to find out if I can tow my vehicle behind a Class A.
Looking to buy a diesel Class A and not sure if I can tow my 2011 F-150 Supercrew 4 wheel drive pick-up 4 wheels down?
4 wheel drive is engaged by dash mounted switch, electric.
Does it need to have some sort of modification to do so?
  • I tow a stick shift Jeep Wrangler 4 down. Once I'm attached to my 'C', I put the Jeep in one of the gears just to keep the transmission from needlessly spinning, put the transfer case in Neutral and turn the ignition key to the first stop to unlock the steering. A reminder: be sure to set the emergency brake before unhooking at the CG for the night unless you want to chase it down the road. Don't ask me how I know that.
  • That's why I like my manual hubs and transfer case. Yea I know I have to get out to lock the hubs. Before I leave the highway I get out and lock the hubs and if I need 4X4 just move the transfer case shift lever to 4Hi it is instant don't have to wait for it to engage. The manual set up is a lot more versatile. I can use 4 low with the hubs unlocked for backing ect. and just put the transfer case into neutral for towing 4 down
  • The electronic transfer case on my 2012 F150 can be set in Neutral and can be towed 4-down. Can't remember the procedure offhand though, something about moving the selector switch to 4-low 3 times within 5 seconds(?)

    Check your owners manual.

Found it - 2Hi to 4Lo 5 times in 7 seconds, transmission in Neutral, key on. Key must be in the ignition (can't remove it in Neutral.)
  • According to Remco:

    "
Vehicle can be flat towed with Lube Pump Kit. Vehicle cannot be flat towed from Manufacturer as is.
The center disconnect must be locked out by capping off one of the front-axle vacuum motor lines for the Manual Transfer Case vehicles. See dealer for assistance.
Ford 6-Speed Transmission, 6R80 Transmission, vehicles with a Manual Shift transfer case can be flat towed. Electronic Shift-On-the Fly 4WD transfer cases cannot be flat towed without a Lube Pump Kit. For vehicles with Manual transfer case, shift transmission into NEUTRAL and shift manual transfer case into NEUTRAL before flat towing."

  • read your owner's manual under either recreational towing or towing behind a motorhome. that is the only valid source. just because somebody here may have towed theirs for 500 miles and the tranny didn't blow up doesn't mean much to me.
