In Wa. no gun can be carried in a car/truck loaded unless you have a CCP.

circa 1987, we were cruising the forest service roads in eastern Wa. deer season, rifle was lying up side down between the two front seats of the truck with the magazine out and the breech open.
Game warden steps out in the road in front of us, we stop, he walks back to us and sees the rifle. He asks us to step out of the truck and place our hands on the hood. we did he reaches in and removes the rifle and checks to see if it was loaded. places it back where it was, and tells us that had it been loaded we would have had the truck impounded and a $500 fine. He then checked our licenses and told us good luck with the hunt.

I get checked most every traffic stop, but it is because they can see it. I produce the CCP and all is good.
I've been thanked twice by the state troopers for putting deer out of their misery. they can't do it because of the expended round paper work. I simply ask "can I put it down" the trooper always say yes.

CA does not recognize any CCP from any other state. That is true. But a firearm in the RV is not a crime. Perfectly legal. Cops know about half of all RVs carry firearms. As for self-defense -- action taken will vary by county. In Los Angeles or San Francisco, possibly what you claim may be true. In the rural counties if the investigation reveals you were within state law and guidelines for use of force, you will be free to go with no charges filed. In CA you cannot use deadly force to defend property -- no castle doctrine. However, if a reasonable person would believe their life, or the life of another, is in imminent danger and no other option available, then deadly force is justified and legal. If you have the opportunity to flee the danger instead of using force, then force may not be justified.

A policy letter from the state Attorney General office, issued many years ago and never rescinded (probably because the current AG Kamala Harris does not know of it) , instructs counties not to prosecute unlicensed concealed weapons in a backpack or pocket, for anyone merely recreating on public land. So hiking a national forest trail with a handgun in your pack, even though technically illegal, should not be prosecuted. Moreover, an officer still needs probable cause to search your pack or your RV. Merely having a CCP is not considered probable cause. This is per our local district attorney office.

Your friend didn't do anything wrong. I personally don't loan guns or chainsaws.

That is why I do not fly anymore, and I do not go to Canada, and I do not go to California, and, even though I am a native Pennsylvanian, I do not go East of the Mississippi River.
I stay within my "comfort zone", always.
Do I carry a weapon? sorry, that information is disseminated on a strict "need to know" basis, and you do not have a NEED!

I have never felt unsafe in a campground (from humans... Bears are another story). I have, however felt unsafe when fueling my motorhome. I was approached by a "gentleman" wearing a hoodie and holding a with a knife requesting that I hand over my wallet. When I raised my shirt to pull my .380, he changed his mind and faded away into the night.

Don't know if he was caught, depends on how good the surveillance footage was. I'm always armed when fueling the rig.
