You bring up a very valid point. We've all seen those personal attacks and they serve no good purpose.
I try to self-moderate any threads I start and keep some sense of calm and focus (not that it always works, mind you.)
Perhaps there could/should be a way for an ORIGINAL POSTER to request a Mod or Admin close or delete a thread they've started if/when if devolves to the point of a non-stop personal attack?
Granted, asking for that might be as futile as asking for a belly-laugh emoji, but what the hey.
