ROUTE suggestions request: Palm Springs CA to Hamilton MT

Hi

This is going to be my first trip (alone) travelling from Palm Springs CA to Darby/Hamilton MT with dog and cat, this summer 2016.
I am looking for some or a safe route(s)as my hubby is flying in later in Missoula MT due to work.
Any help is appreciated also maybe safe spots to overnight park. Planning to arrive within 2-4 days, since I am on my vacation right? :)
Traveling in Class A 38ft rv diesel pusher. I am not afraid to drive the rv (as my hubby said years ago: drive the front and the back will follow LOL he went to take a nap after that).
I am planning to travel back by making a family visit in Brookings, Oregon.
THANK YOU so much in advance!!! :)

I answered you in your other post on a different forum :) but we've taken 93 a few times and enjoy it. We found nice boondocking spots but all the major towns Panaca, Ely, Wells, Twin Falls area, Arco have RV parks. Then pick up 28 in Idaho and the Salmon area has parks. We much prefer secondary roads to interstates.

That's really nice to know :) I just heard that Challis is a tough part of the route going North on the 93 so I'm glad that's less of a worry.
Nice to meet u here too. I'm just trying to get around on the rv forums lol it's new to me so bare with me pls :)
  • Hi everyone, sorry for the delay, not my style of letting people "hang".
Anyhow, we traded our 38' coach last week for 40' coach so things are slightly of schedule with work, getting new coach setup and planning etc lol
Let me look into maybe being able to meet u on the CA/OR border in July. And thank u so much for the offer, I really appreciate that :)

Is it that parking lot by the hotel and harbor overlooking the ocean?
Yes, I am kind of flexible on the dates :)

Yea, it is across the bridge, down the hill past the best western right on the beach. 93? Dont know for sure, but lots of people drive it.
Option 1 would be 395 north to US20 in Oregon east to Ontario connecting to I84.
If you pick this option, plan a night at Goose Lake State park. Beautiful park right on the OR/CA border. Not full hookups, but a really nice place. BTW we will be hosting there in July if that matches your timing.

How is it driving the 93?
Is it a better route than the I15 SLC? And are there any camping/overnight spots on the 93?

Yes, I am kind of flexible on the dates :)
  • BTW, it is really a parking lot, but the county RV park in Brookings is right on the ocean with great views.
All the roads I suggested are fine for large RVs.
  • Oh wow, you are so fast! Thank you so much!!
I am going to check it all out right now :)
  • East to LV, 93 north to I84, east and north around the west side of Yellowstone. Two days should do it. From Hamilton, north picking up I90 west. South on 395 60 miles west of Spokane, thru Tri Cities to I82 south, I84 towards Portland, south on I205 to I5 south to exit 163, hwy 38 west to Reedsport, 101 south to Brookings. Just south of Reedsport is Salmon Harbor RV at Winchester bay. Great park with fantastic sunsets.
