Selling an RV

Hi All,

I've had our RV for just over 2 years now, and the first year we did tons of travel with her. The past year almost none. I think it's time to sell her. I hate selling things though.

We live in Miami and I'd love to know if anyone is aware of a dealer where I can sell it to them at 20% off of what a private sales would net me. Nadaguides says I should be getting $28k, and if I got $22k I'd be fine with that. I'd probably even cringe and get ride of her for $20k. Maybe. Anyone know of such a service or dealer that does this? I'm not keen on consignment but that seems to be the only thing I've found. Any hints / thoughts would be appreciated.
  • Last year I advertised our 25 foot travel trailer on Craigs list.
I listed the price, and figured I might have to come down a thousand.
Two weeks after I listed it, the second person that looked at it asked if I was open to an offer and I said yes "if it was reasonable"
They offered two hundred less than my asking price and naturally I sold it that day.

I have bought a pop up trailer, and kayaks and canoes and sold items on Craigs list and always have come away happy.

Just make sure if you do sell it on Craigs List only accept cash and do the transaction at a bank or in the parking lot of a Police station.

  • Gotcha - thanks for the ideas. I'm going to bring her into a consignment dealer on the weekend. As I said, I just have no interest in selling the RV. The tire kickers and negotiations would drive me bonkers and then if something goes wrong with it after purchase I'd feel bad.

As to why I'm not driving it anymore, we bought it when we were moving cross country (California to Florida) and lived out of her for 6 weeks. Also did a Florida to Canada trip and back after we moved in. But that said, we don't really travel at all anymore. If we do, hotels are just so much easier.
  • I think your best choices are; Craigslist, RV
Trader.com, or if you don't want to sell it yourself, Consignment.
If you can post a message as well as you did, you won't have any
    problem selling it yourself.

Sold 1 and bought 2 on Craigs List. Just read up on the scams. Don't reply to anyone on an offshore oil rig buying "the unit" for their father and want to deal exclusively through PayPal.

People expect to get a deal from things sold on Craigs List. Put it on for $28k and settle for $22k.

LOL x2 on this or they are a long haul trucker. Had that from scammer on Craigslist ad I placed on a motorcycle.
  • I love to buy and sell. I would sell it on Craigs List I would think Dealers would be one of the worst places to get 60% of what it is worth.

  • What caused you to not use it after the first year? Perhaps there could be suggestions for you regarding that instead of selling it.
  • You could call local RV dealers to see if any are interested in buying your RV directly. Would just depend on how much they needed used RVs to sell.

But I would also check out local RV consignment dealers. They have access to a wide range of potential buyers. They typically charge 6-10% of the sell price. That would be within the range of return you are wanting to get provided they can sell it for what you think it is worth. And they would handle all the sell transaction details. A simple phone call should get you answers.

I, too, am not to keen on selling my RV myself. Can probably get more money, but not worth the hassle to me.
