When we first got into this "hobby" in 2000 a map of the US looked easy enough to cross. We did the NE US and crossed several states in one day.
We did the Black Hills area the first time and found out the further west we got, the roads were longer and most of the states bigger. Depending on your route there will likely be places to stay without reservations. South Dakota and Wyoming are good examples, SD has big rest areas and I-90 in Chamberlain caters to RVs. Cabelas has stores in Mitchell and Rapid City that invite you in. Rapid has a dump station. We have never stopped at Wall, Arrow CG, that did not have an opening. Not a resort, but FHU and plenty of space.
Somedays I will have lots of energy and can do 500 plus miles. Other days 2 or 3 hundred and I am ready to pull in.
So, I said all that to say this. Chances are you will find a CG to overnite, look at the signs as your drive and check your campground directory guide book (a great investment that internet cannot beat).
You might be a little over confident in your destination and return time limits, but you will have fun no matter how long and or where you end up. "It's all and adventure - let's enjoy what we have".
