Water Fillup

Hi Folks,

To the long-timers and full-timers out there; where do you guys usually fill up your water tanks? I’m not usually gone for more than a few days when I camp, so I typically just fill up at home and it lasts the time I’m gone. I’m planning a longer trip this summer (2 or 3 months) so I’m curious as to where to fill up. I’ll be boondocking most of the time so filling up at camps isn’t an option. It would also be great if I didn’t have to pull 150 gallons of water with me for a couple of thousand miles.

Thanks in advance for any help.

  • The dogs and I drink bottled water. My black tank is full the clean water tank was a problem. I filled up in Hanover PA on May 3rd and filled up a 5 gallon water cooler. I used the camper water washing dishes (paper and plastic helped reduce consumption of water in the camper's tank) showers (navy showers) and toiler use.

Some vandals / thieves destroyed the water supply at the house I am staying at and I had to wait to get it repaired so that full tank and extra 5 gallons I brought from PA was a wise decision. On Monday the 10th I was low on water and just added the water in the 5 gallon container to my camper supply and probably had a few days left when the water company restored water service the following day. I am guessing that I could have made it till today or maybe yesterday if the water had not been restored. If you don't have a gadget called a water thief you may want to look into it. Using bottled water for drinking means you do not need to be as picky where you get your water. Using a 5 gallon cooler may increase your chances of getting water, in some cases a place may be willing to give you 5 gallons but may be reluctant to let you fill up what they think is 100s of gallons of water. Even though your tank may only hold 40 gallons someone may think it holds 100s of gallons
  • There's a phone app that shows all the dump stations.
My tanks get full before I run out of water.
  • I was going to suggest that at many places you dump, that they wave a potable water hose nearby.

Here's an Article about getting potable water on the road that I came across.
  • First, even boondocking you will need, at some point, to dump. Easiest way is to pull in a campground, ask about dumping (small fee probably) and fill water while there. Do not be concerned about carrying water in tank while traveling, your rig will not know the difference.

  • While this may sound backwards, I have found it easier to locate a dump place than potable water. Lots of places have it and the employees don't even know about it.

The truck stops that have an RV lane often have potable water. Many times the water tap that you can find is marked as non-potable and this can be for good reason.

Most fast food places have an outside tap that requires a key to open the valve. Often, nobody knows where the key is or has seen it in years.

    Just keep looking and asking.

  • Anywhere there is a hose attachment is an option. Some state's rest areas, gas stations, and even municipal agencies will let you fill your tanks. In some cases, you may have to pay a small fee.

    It doesn't hurt to ask!
