'14 short box Ram with older fifth

Hi folks,

Wondering if anyone is towing an older fifth wheel that doesn't have the contoured front cap with a short box truck?

I have a '14 Ram 3500 and the Arctic Fox ('11) I'm going to look at is the older style with the 'square edged' front cap.

I have an Andersen rail mount hitch, and it has a few configurations that it can be set up with that orients the ball a bit farther back. Don't want it too far back so the kingpin swing doesn't contact the bed rails.

Just hoping someone has some experience with this sort of set up so I can avoid the dreaded front cap/rear window debacle.

Thanks,

Mike
  • I had a 1995 Snowbird and pulled with 2009 2500 Ram short box, added a Pop V 10" extension to the pin box and it worked ok. Didn't have to fool with a slider either. It just fastened to existing pin,not to hard to put on.
  • Forum member IdaD tows an older square front FW, with similar Ram, and Andersen hitch. He has no issue, and IIRC, he does mostly boondocking, so likely in some pretty tight situations.

  • Talked to the dealer and he said that the previous owner used a short box with at slider.
Then he told me that said slider would be available if needed.
Think we'll go have a look, and if we buy it I will first try setting up the Andersen and if it doesn't look like it'll work I'll grab the slider they have with it.
  • I towed a 2000 26' Jayco Quest stick and tin square faced 5th wheel with a '98 Cummins Ram 2500HD short bed. I could do U-turns with it without hitting the cab but backing up I had to be really careful.

    Especially a Ram.

  • I have the same truck and the fw you describe and it's 102 inches wide. Superglide sliding hitch works for me.
