1984 Chevy Blazer (Full Size 4x4)

Can I flat tow a 1984 full size Blazer, without making modifications to the Blazer? The Blazer has an auto trans and 4X4 transfer case.

Due to its age, I am having difficulty locating information on whether I can flat tow it as is or if it needs to be modified. The Blazer in good condition and I can get it at a really good price (Currently owned by a relative). I do know that a tow bar and brake system will be required and the weight of the Blazer will have to be checked against the towing capacity of the RV.

Thanks
  • I can't speak specifically to your 84' blazer but I can tell you that finding a straight answer on the older models is hard. I have an 83' ford f-250 that I would like to tow with a polaris ranger on the flat bed. After talking to transmission shops and four wheel drive shops I got 10 different responses. Finally was able to track down an original owners manual for an 83' f-250 and under recreational towing it states that I can with no mileage restrictions but not to exceed 45 MPH:(
  • Not Sure myself, but I would Think by placing the transfer case in neutral it would be good to go.

In a '79 Jeep CJ7 Automatic, I could flat tow it by placing the Transfer Case in Neutral & have the regular shift in Park.

Hope you find the correct answers. Good Luck.

Oh, yes, Don't forget to leave the key turn on enough so the steering wheel isn't locked, so it can turn as is needed.

If you happen to get any 'shimming' of the front wheels when towing, I placed a bungee cord over the steering wheel (Geo Metro) & to the break peddle tightly & it stopped the from wheels from shimming back & forth when it was being towed. Standard Transmission on it.
