4 down automatic dinghy

We have a 2004 Saturn Vue that we have used as a dinghy since we bought it new. We are thinking about replacing it and looking for suggestions. Our needs: Automatic, 4 down, no modifications other than tow plate and wiring, decent ride, SUV if possible. Curb weight for our Saturn is just under 3500 LB, so we would like to stay at about the same weight.

No jeeps. Have rented jeeps a few times and we don't care for the ride.

Thanks
  • RRTom, geare is a good place to see if something is or can be made towable.

I also like the FMCA towing guide. You need to be a member.

  • We pull a Ford Edge Sport AWD 4-down. Only modification required was baseplate, light wiring kit and battery disconnect solenoid. The 2019 model is no longer listed as 4-down towable.

None of the automatic Subaru models are 4down towable, and since 2017 I believe Subaru does not certify any of it's product to be dingy towable like Toyota.

  • "Otherwise we would have bought the Honda CRV". The last 4 down towable CR-V was 2014. Might still be an option if you could find a low mileage used one.

Thanks for the link, very helpful. We are not necessarily partial to GM. We bought the Saturn because it has a HONDA engine and transmission. Otherwise we would have bought the Honda CRV.
