Bottled beer and soda (pop) was sold only in glass bottles about ~ 60 to 70 years ago and by far most were refillable with a deposit and were returned and many states had a 2 cent etc deposit charged by state law refunded when returned to a store back then. Not invocated by the beverage fillers to save money! There were NO aluminum beer or soda cans until the late 1960s+ and then just a few in the beverage industry then. Plastic followed.

As the above quote stated, aluminum use in cans started as a top on a steel can and a few years later the poptop was put into use by a couple beverage concerns. So therefore until there was aluminum and or plastic containers being used in numbers, there would not be a law for a deposit on them as they didn't exist. There could only be a deposit law inplace for what the industry actually used. Looking it up revealed that many states actually had a deposit/refund law over 20 years before Oregon and it was for what was being used by fillers of course. Glass bottles!

I don't know your age but us old farts know the real facts as we lived during the time all this occured. I know Michigan had a deposit law when I was a kid about 8-9 years old in the very early 1950's of 2 cents and all that really happened is that in 1976 Michigan increased the deposit to 10 cents and included plastic and aluninum containers also.

BTW, Schlitz Brewing and Bottling is a whopping 83 air miles from were we live and where I lived as a kid too, not about 1800 miles away. Schlitz was very popular around here then. Oregon was NOT the first to have a container deposit law by any stretch, just the first to include other types of beverage containers.

Back in the day VA had a 2 cent deposit while NC had a 5 cent deposit. That coincided with my Dad's final post for the Gov being in VA. As the family other than our clan was all in NC we traveled back and forth a lot. That money bought a lot of sodas and baseball cards at first and gas later. Seven bottles was a gallon of gas then.
Nobody picked one up for 2 cents and they weren't tagged to any particular state.

The industry probably wanted their bottles back for cost reasons. It’s cheaper to wash the bottles than to make new ones.

I’m guessing the “Oregon first” was the state law requiring it on many containers, regardless of value to the supplier.

It was 2 Cents per bottle for refillable soda, beer, bottles only. I lived it as a child and had collected a heck of a lot of those 2 cent'ers myself and took them to the store to get my money! It said refillable in raised letters down on the side at the very bottom of the bottle! If the "refillable was not there, not accepted for a refund. I do not know if anyother states had a similar deposit setup back then but Michigan sure did!

The 10 cents deposit and refund was established by law in Michigan in 1976 to cover glass, plastic, and aluminum beverage containers. Back in the 1950's and before only glass was used for bottles and refillable bottles. That's where the name "bottles" came from! Glass!

in ca it is by the pound at less than scrap value.
i cashed in two years worth of picking up cans. did not even cover the cost of one box of trash bags.
but took six 30 gallon bags of crushed cans in.

but it is amazing all the empty beer cans along our roads.

I had a paper route in PA that required miles of bicycle travel. Collecting the bottles thrown from cars paid for much of my soft drinks at the country store. Just think, people actually picked up things before the force of law. I wonder how much the government bottle police gets paid nowadays.

In Tennessee we really don't notice the cans much. They're mixed in with all the other trash the idiots throw out so they just blend in.

Oregon was the first in the nation in 1971. Michigan followed in 1976.
