Here in the NE, it's real... I know of probably 15 people that have it, 8 are personal friends... Out of the people I know that have it 3 have died...
Comparing it to the flu is just silly, the flu has a vaccine.... That will help to squash the seriousness of the sickness.... there is no vaccine for this.... We didn't make this up,, look all over the world..
It's easy to not believe there is a problem when your not living in it...Once it hits home you will change your tune..
No, comparing it to the flu is reasonable, a flu shot will not guarantee that you won't get the flu because there are several strains and they only concoct vaccines for certain strains.
As far as hitting home, it already has. I've had it, and at least 6 people I know have also had it. It has been around since back in November. They just didn't know what it was, only that it was a very serious upper respiratory tract infection caused by a virus. It hit nursing homes very hard in this area. This was back before it had a name.
It's very unpleasant, but not a death sentence by any means. But if you have health issues, lung or respiratory problems, asthma, a compromised immune system, you can be more at risk.
