Anode Barnacle Question

? Aside from wear/erosion, is the a time you should get a new anode regardless of what it looks like?

Looking at some of the water heater & anode notes got me to wondering...
Going into our 5er's 5th year we still have the original anode. All I've done to it is scrub the little barnacles off every fall as part of winterizing. There's virtually no wear/erosion, just a few little pits from where the barnacles used to be.
  • No need to replace until 75% of sacrificial material has been dissolved.
Depending on water source that could take couple of months or many years.

Routine drain/flush of WH tank and clean up of anode is good maintenance.

  • As long as there is still material on it, you should be good. If the thin rod that extends through the middle is mostly visible, time for a new one.
