another tire question

We noticed dry rot on the 2 passenger side tires today. Drivers side tires are ok. These are the original tires from when we bought the tt in Jan 2011. We are putting this tt up for sale on craigslist in a few weeks but have 900 mile round trip planned for next week first. Would you chance it and drive on the tires with a little dry rot or would you just replace the two?

If the answer is replace the two.... I have been pricing ST tires. I have found taskmaster provider radial ST tires for $88/tire plus installation etc. Also there are hi run radial boat tire (6ply) for $69/tire. I found a Carlisle that is cheap but not sure it would fit... I have 205/75/r15 ST tires currently on tt (can't remember brand). These are Carlisle sport trail LH 205/75/d15. These are $70/tire. I know both the Carlisle and the task master are load range c1. My tt weighs 7300 lbs loaded. I don't want to put a bunch of money into tires knowing I'm selling it (getting a new one) but I want to be safe for my trip. Thanks.

So the spare looks ok and it turns out we have the trackmaster tires on the tt. I think I will switch one of the tires for the unused spare (that has always been kept covered) use one of the old tires as a spare and buy 1 new tire. If for some reason the spare seems sketchy then we will get 2 new tires. I will let the next owner get the new tires of their choosing (whether it be trackmaster, Carlisle or maxxis). Hopefully I'm not being too foolish here.

    Sounds like a good plan.
The next owner maybe the type that pulls the trailer a couple of short trips a year to a local campground and the trailer sits 95 percent of its life. Cheap ST/any brand tires work great for that purpose.

Then the flip side the next owner may put thousands of highway miles a year on the trailer. If he's wise he will find a tire type/brand that will stand up long term for that type of use.

  • If it were me, I would replace all four of them, ( and service the brakes and bearings ) not only for the peace of mind for the upcoming trip, but also as a selling point. Polish up your salesmanship for the upcoming sale, and be able to point out to buyers that ST tires require replacement after three or so years, and that brakes and bearings need regular PM also. Let your new tires and service be a up-sell point for the trailer. You should be able to get the bulk of your new tire/service investment back out of it.
  • Do unto others?

The there is the thread....."I'm looking at buying a trailer, but this guy put cheap new tires on it. I have to wonder what else was done on the cheap side?"

Tires and brakes are not places to cheap out!

Let you conscience be your guide.
  • That cheap investment, I'd get all four replaced for under $400 ish...

New tires could be a great selling point...even if they are cheap...they will be new!
