Are aftermarket tachometers reliable?

I want to install a tachometer on my 91 Class C with an EFI Ford 460 power plant. Are they at all accurate and reliable?

Anything you get will be more accurate than what you have now ;)
And if it was slightly inaccurate, will you be even know????
  • Electronic tacometers just measure pules. Pretty simple device. You should be able to check calibration with a signal generator.
  • Don't know if that year supports an OBDI, but if it does, look at a scan guage. You can get the tach function plus about 20 others.

  • I have two in separate older vehicles and I have never had a single issue with mine. I too like knowing how many rev's my engine is making. Both were straight forward and easy to hook up, using a lead off the coil and selecting how many cylinders on the tach it self. Most come with good instructions and I hooked mine up so even the dash lights would turn on the back light in the tach. All the best, Hans
