auxiliary lights with dolly?

Do most who are using a tow dolly also have auxiliary lights for the rear of the toad, or just rely on the dolly lights? -- Mick
  • We use auxiliary lighting, most people are going to be looking at the toad, not the dolly.
  • Indiana doesn't require lights on the toad when using a dolly and as I understand it most all other states don't either. Since my Demco KarKaddy dolly has large LED tail lights I don't use auxiliary lights during the day but I have a set that I will put on if I ever have to drive late in the evening, at night or in heavy rain. I’ve been traveling this way for 10 years, 50,000 miles, in 41 of the states (see map below) and have never had a problem.

  • I've always used the magnetic lights on the towed vehicle even though the dolly came with LED lights when I bought it. It just seemed safer having lights at the very end of the load. I followed the principal of having a red flag on the end of a load of lumber or a ladder. Also about the second time I used the dolly I arrived to find one of the dolly mounted lights just swinging from it's wires after being ripped off the fender. Never knew what did that.
  • i always use the extra lights. its my theory that anything i can do to make me more visible to the motoring public is a plus.
  • I run with the magnetic add on lights near the rear of the dollied car. Normally you are only allowed 24"-30" overhang past the tail lights. Better safe than sorry.
  • Back when I used a dolly, I only used the dolly lights during daylight hours. If towing after dark, I would put magnetic lights on the trunk of the car. Can't be too careful. I didn't want the unlit tail of the car sticking out that far past the lights in the dark.
  • I use magnetic lights in addition to the dolly lights. I have lost the dolly lights before. I am still planning to install diodes and use the vehicles own lights someday. I also try to be off the road before dark. JMO
