Battery Drain

I have 2 Deep Cycle Group 24 batteries. We were only running the heater in our 26' travel trailer. Both batteries were fully charged but only lasted 5 hours. When I went to hookup to leave I noticed the pin for the breakaway had come out. Would this have drained the batteries and could it have hurt the brakes?

  • There should be no problem with pulling the pin for 15 or 20 minuteS when standing still. While moving is a different story.
  • When visiting one of our sons and his family the driveway grade is pretty steep. To level my TT I need to put cinder blocks under the tongue and front stabilizing jacks raising the front high enough to level. I of course will chock all four wheals but I'm still insecure about rolling forward to settle against the chocks when disengaging from the hitch. I was thinking of pulling the breakaway pin to hold the trailer until I read the posts in this thread. Any suggestions or ideas to reduce the movement as the trailer settles in? Thanks in advance for your help.

Yes, the pin out with drain your batteries. Happened to a friend of mine on his rig a while back. His battery kept going dead and we couldn't figure out why until he discovered the breakaway pin had come out. Didn't hurt anything otherwise.
  • The trailer never moved when the pin was out. The brakes seem to work. I was just worried it might have hurt the magnets.

    Yes and maybe.
There would have been a 12amp drain for the time the pin was pulled. That will take batteries down fast.
As for the brakes, they may have got hot. You need to check and make sure they are working.
  • Yes your brakes were on as long as the pin is out of the little box, that pin separates two metal strips that connect the battery to the brake magnets.

Watch out for kids pulling the pins out, some times they steal the pins and cables.
