Just watched this last night. Seems counterintuitive but I learned something! Hopefully I'll never have to test it

Good video. Sad thing is that I learned that in high school drivers ed. Which seems to be a thing of the past. Too bad, a semester long class beats a few hours learning rules any day

In the report I read it WAS a blowout as stated by the officer and the wife WAS driving behind him. There are different news story links floating around these forums.

From the story you posted here, there is no mention of a blowout in the story. There is also nothing in this story that states his wife was following him. The main witness that was quoted said him and his wife (the witness' wife) were driving behind him.

The witness also stated that the speed of the RV never changed, even after it veered off the highway. It sounds to me like it might have been a medical emergency.

If you click on the "How the story appeared in print" link, there is the comment by their son;

His parents were returning home from a long weekend in Montauk late Sunday afternoon—his mother was driving in a car behind the RV, he said—when a tire blew on the RV, causing the elder Mr. Santos to lose control of the vehicle and veer off Sunrise Highway just west of the Hampton Bays exit.

According to the updated story, a man and his wife were about 200 yards behind the RV when it occurred. The witness said the RV speed was the same throughout the accident. That makes it sound like the RV driver was unable to hit the brake, maybe indicating he had a heart attack and was dead before the vehicle ever left the highway.

In the original story, the dead man's son did say it was a blowout and that the RV driver's wife was driving a car behind the RV. It will be interesting to see whether the son's assumption that it was a blowout is correct.

Been driving for about 50 years (now) about 10 years ago I watched that video (And a few times since)

I've had blow outs on cars, many of them over the years, Assorted reasons including road debris.. never lost control Even got to play the Red ball in a game of Freeway Billiards (the other guy knocked the red ball into the side pocket) Troopers investigating were amazed I kept the dull side down and the shiny side up.

And I LEARNED FROM THAT VIDEO.

I highly recommend it.
