Broken roof vent cover

Got some serious weather here in Utah last night, tornado touched down less then 5 miles from my home. I had just parked the trailer in front of the house to get ready for a 3 week trip when the wind and hail hit. Hail blew a hole in the bathroom vent cover. Ran to my local trailer shop this morning but they were to busy to help so up on the roof I went to replace 3 vent covers, got it done wet butt and all.

I had never changed a roof vent before so I didn't realize I needed to remove the screen and lift mechanism to get the ball out of the track. Well I wasn't going back down the ladder so I tweaked the old cover track to get it loose with my Leatherman then gently forced the ball slider deal into the new track. All three covers work perfect. I'll see how unbreakable the lifetime guarantee unbreakable covers are?

Also notice that my spare tire was hanging loose under the trailer, upon investigation I found that the carrier was all jacked up so the tire ended up in the back of the pickup and the hanger got removed. Guess I will figure out a new spare tire carrier come spring so I am not having to load and unload the spare out of the pickup all the time.

Its always something, I just want to hit the wood for some camping and hunting.
  • Two thoughts
    Vent covers are great
Thought of a front hitch for your truck and then a hitch mounted spare carrier?

My little toy hauler has one of these spare wheel hoists under the rear deck. Works well.

  • On our previous camper, hail broke out all 3 covers on the roof ... 2 vents and the bathroom skylight. Got them fixed easily enough. But next trailer, when we purchased it new, I had the dealer install the Max Air type covers over the vents. At least if hail hits again, the covers will get beat up and not the vent cover. Maybe it will prevent everything from getting soaked with water coming thorugh the busted out vent covers (if hail hits again). Turned out it was a great decision. It's really nice leaving the vents open when it's raining and rain doesn't come in.

Glad you got-er fixed. FYI, I carry my TT spare tire in the back of my pick-up truck. It's just kind of a permanent fixture now. I carry a cage on my trailer bumper hitch now, no room for the spare tire any more.
  • Nice job - looking for more "wet work" visit Oregon -- have new Fantastic vent coming this week and can always use an experienced vent guy.
