Unless you are THE target for a specific reason, anything you can do to deter a thief will help. Like others have said, just try and make it easier for them to move to a different target.
Some have made comparisons to stick built homes and how much more secure they are. It is not that difficult to break into a house either. There is the phrase you don't need to outrun the dog (or whatever is chasing you), you just need to outrun the next slower person.
Having experience with this I can assure you that insurance will not make you whole. You might get lucky and come out even on the monetary side but they will not fix your wife or kids on sense of security.
