Camp host right or wrong?

Camp hosts cant do anything about that sort of situation. But he should have called the ranger on duty to help you sort out the situation.
As OSP camp hosts we do not handle money, or pay envelopes. That is the paid rangers job. Did you have a copy of your pay envelop?

Sounds like you took the high ground, and I would be proud of that.

Next time, though, you might leave a chair or something in the site.

You did not "occupy" the site by leaving items there such as previous post a chair.

Your rig is pretty small. Maybe you could have tried saying your registration was on the site, you understand the site appeared empty, but would you please share with us.

You never know, you might have walked away with a friend.

So if you are in a MH and no toad, the bottom line is to never leave your site because someone else can take it. I have done this in the past and have never had a problem.

I do not want to cause any hate and discontent, sorry if I did.

We also use an orange cone with our name and "Occupied" painted on it.

We have also left an empty 1/2 gallon Tequila bottle on the picnic table with a note that said:
We'll be back. . . Bubba"

Not saying that. And I know this is no consolation, but you could have taken the yellow one night only sign and flipped it to reserved. Or left a chair or something so people would know the site was occupied. Sadly the host seems to have not done his job either. He should have got ahold of the ranger on duty. But at the very least he should have put you in one of their overflow sites for the night and let the rangers sort it out in the morning. At least thats what I would have done.

A few years ago, we did have a paid reservation at a camp site (Travel Trailer). When we arrived someone parked their car in our spot. Quite obvious someone visiting another camper. We couldn't find anyone around who knew who's car it was. After waiting in the road for about 45 minutes, going from campsite to campsite, we had no choice but to go back to the gate house and raise our concerns. Park staff came to the camp site and couldn't find anyone either who owned the car. Finally the campground management called the local sheriff who came out.

Once the sheriff came out and started walking around the car (and we were still in the middle of the road with our camper), someone came running over real fast and moved the car.

At that point, I didn't care what the sheriff or the campground manager did with the guy. I was just glad to get my campsite. The campground was booked, and we were a considerable distance from home! (and we had paid for the site). It only happened once. I suppose it's not so much a problem if you have a trailer that separates from tow vehicle and you can leave it in place.

Always always always always leave something in the site to show it's occupied.

Rangers are sometimes not much help either. We arrive with a reservation at a full COE campground. We had already paid in advance. We arrived at 4pm, checkout was at 3pm. Site still occupied, went back to gate and talked to ranger. He talked to them but said he could not make them leave. It was a waterfront site and they stayed until dark. Ranger did nothing.
