Camp host right or wrong?

Only site open was disabled site (Oregon State Park). I am a disabled VET so the camp host said I could have the disabled site. I registered and placed registration slip on site post and we drove to town for dinner.

Upon returning our site was taken by another disabled VET and our registration slip was gone. I talked to the camp host and he said he did not know this other person had taken my spot, but he would not do anything about it.

I decided to just shake it off and went to Home Depot and spent the night, we were going to pick-up supplies there anyway.

I had forgot all about this till reading about people securing sites and not using them. It's not good for my blood pressure, I need to let it go again - sorry for the rant.

If the OP left his tag on the site, then the usurper is to blame as well. When you remove someone else's tag to put yours up, you usually look at the old one - at least we do. If the dates are the same as the one you are coming in on, wouldn't you check?

I've know people that chain their occupied cones or chairs to their campsite to protect them when they are away. . . and to keep them from being stolen. There is no respect anymore.

Not your fault but Next time you are in Nat park or Nat campground ask if they have any "campground Occupied" signs. We picked up 4 at Yellowstone. I think 50 cents each for a cardboard 10x12 sign. Get some and stop by staples or such and have it laminated. Then for about $5.00 pick up some yellow plastic chain (home depot etc) 10 feet is maybe 1 pound.

Then when you leave your campground drape one end on your campground post and other end on something.

A lot of people just see an empty site if no RV is there.

Short story..we were at the 1000 trails near Astoria, waiting to check in. This guy walks up to the guard house and said "we found a campsite but the previous people left some chairs. If you (the guards) have their phone number maybe you can call and they can come back for them". Guards explained that chairs were left so others would know campsite was occupied. The look on the guys face:)

Bottom line...some people just don't know if a vehicle/RV isn't at a campsite.

And some places have "campsite occupied" signs you can borrow.

Rangers are sometimes not much help either. We arrive with a reservation at a full COE campground. We had already paid in advance. We arrived at 4pm, checkout was at 3pm. Site still occupied, went back to gate and talked to ranger. He talked to them but said he could not make them leave. It was a waterfront site and they stayed until dark. Ranger did nothing.

A few years ago, we did have a paid reservation at a camp site (Travel Trailer). When we arrived someone parked their car in our spot. Quite obvious someone visiting another camper. We couldn't find anyone around who knew who's car it was. After waiting in the road for about 45 minutes, going from campsite to campsite, we had no choice but to go back to the gate house and raise our concerns. Park staff came to the camp site and couldn't find anyone either who owned the car. Finally the campground management called the local sheriff who came out.

Once the sheriff came out and started walking around the car (and we were still in the middle of the road with our camper), someone came running over real fast and moved the car.

At that point, I didn't care what the sheriff or the campground manager did with the guy. I was just glad to get my campsite. The campground was booked, and we were a considerable distance from home! (and we had paid for the site). It only happened once. I suppose it's not so much a problem if you have a trailer that separates from tow vehicle and you can leave it in place.

Not saying that. And I know this is no consolation, but you could have taken the yellow one night only sign and flipped it to reserved. Or left a chair or something so people would know the site was occupied. Sadly the host seems to have not done his job either. He should have got ahold of the ranger on duty. But at the very least he should have put you in one of their overflow sites for the night and let the rangers sort it out in the morning. At least thats what I would have done.

From the edited Duplicate Post?

We also use an orange cone with our name and "Occupied" painted on it.

We have also left an empty 1/2 gallon Tequila bottle on the picnic table with a note that said:
We'll be back. . . Bubba"

So if you are in a MH and no toad, the bottom line is to never leave your site because someone else can take it. I have done this in the past and have never had a problem.

I do not want to cause any hate and discontent, sorry if I did.

Thanks all hope all have a good weekend and happy early Thanksgiving.

Your rig is pretty small. Maybe you could have tried saying your registration was on the site, you understand the site appeared empty, but would you please share with us.

You never know, you might have walked away with a friend.

You did not "occupy" the site by leaving items there such as previous post a chair.

Sounds like you took the high ground, and I would be proud of that.

Next time, though, you might leave a chair or something in the site.

Thank you for your service!

Camp hosts cant do anything about that sort of situation. But he should have called the ranger on duty to help you sort out the situation.
As OSP camp hosts we do not handle money, or pay envelopes. That is the paid rangers job. Did you have a copy of your pay envelop?
