Can you really tow a fiver with a 1/2 ton?

You would need an F150 SuperCab with the MaxTow package. Maybe a Crew Cab only if you pack light or choose one of the shorter floor-plans.. You can't get the Max Payload package with a 5.5' bed,

But you have not figured what your payload max for the truck is;
What is the dry weight and the max payload (cargo capacity) for your truck. It is on the placard on the truck.
While your truck may be able to tow the thing the payload of the truck may not be sufficient

Ditto. You're falling into the trap of looking at tow capacity and not payload. Add a hitch, passengers, and gear and you'll be over your GVW.

With max payload, max towing, max GVWR I think you are good up to 10,000 GVWR 5th wheel trailer.
Just do not expect to put 5 large people and 400# of firewood in the truck also.
Been towing mine 11 years. 7880 GVWR trailer.

Verify truck GVWR(on the door) to the spec sheet before you buy.

I'd want a SuperCrew. 6.5' bed would be ok if necessary. Would I need any kind of slider, or pin extension, etc?

So can we say Jayco is being misleading when calling these "half-ton towable"? Technically possible, but in the real world with truck and trailer loaded, it's a no-go?

You can tow one and my Sears LT1000 Lawn Mower can spot one in my back yard too but I bet you will not be a happy camper.

Old school still says 7500lbs for F150's

My 8800lb sticker 2004 Flagstaff 5th wheel that the dealership said "Sure - you can tow this with your F150 truck" made it about 250 miles before I parked up next to woods here and still use it today for a get-away place here at the house for us and the visiting kids.

My F150 does great towing my loaded down 4200lb Off-Road POPUP trailer anywhere my 4WD truck will take it... Gets good gas mileage too on the road... When we are making a run to Gatlinburg TN we will see the same big rig pass us two or three times. Guess he is making multiple fuel stops along the way... We can make the 450Mile one way trip on one tank of gas...

With manufacturers building light weight 5ers and half ton payload ratings and power continuing to increase, yes you can. Just make sure you match the trailer LOADED pin weight to the truck's payload rating.

There are half ton trucks that say they can, and fifth wheel trailers that claim they are. Towing comfort is somewhat subjective with everybody having their own comfort level when hauling their rigs down the road. Only you can state if that combo will do the job to your satisfaction, good or bad responses about the above scenario may not be pertinent for your situation, driving habits, or expectations.
