Which is the correct way to hook up the city water reducer valve? From the RV, through the hose and then to the water source? Or from the water source back the other way to the RV?

Get a good quality adjustable water pressure regulator vs a $10 throw away.
Watts makes great ones.

The only thing that will minimize rv plumbing leaks is not having the water turned on.

Correct answer. It pays to buy a quality Watts unit for about $75 instead of making expensive repairs inside your unit or even replacing your water hose or filter.

I've done it both ways over the years and find I prefer my water hose directly connected to the faucet, and my regulator screwed to a quick connect that I can plug in at the trailer. I hated screwing the regulator on the faucet and then screwing the hose on to the regulator every time on my aching knees.

Wrong. Put the pressure reducer on the faucet.

X2 correct way.

It protects your hose from pressure as well as the RV.

Well it looks like water source to the RV. Great, as that is the way we have it hooked up. I appreciate all the answers, thanks all!

I used to put it on between the RV and the hose. Then I stayed at a campground where the pressure was so high, it split the end of my hose attached to the spigot. Fortunately I had a repair part on hand -- and ever since I've put it on the spigot end.

I put mine on the faucet, one time I didn't and the next morning my hose looked like it ate a rabbit.

Is it time for your medication or mine?

You can't control the campgrounds pressure but you can reduce your own, the quicker you reduce water pressure on your own equipment the better off you'll be.
