X2 on the BBB comment. I was a small local contractor and bid against some rather larger home improvement companies. They never could beat my bids, or quality of work for that matter. I lost a couple bids though because the homeowners said the larger company were members of the local Better Business Bureau and I wasn't.
I contacted the BBB office and applied to join. No problem, I could join right up for $350.00 a month! They would even give me a stickers for the windows of my truck showing I was a proud BBB member.
They didn't want to know if I was a good contractor or a rip off artist, they just wanted $350.00 a month!
