Extended warranties

We have a 2009 Tiffin motorhome. What is the best extended warranty we can get? We are mostly interested in getting a warranty that covers the powertrain. Thanks for the information. Thanks, John and Linda
  • We had Xtraride warranty on our last two DPs. In both cases, we received more in repair costs than we spent for the warranty. With that said, after the warranty expired on our current coach, we went it alone. The cost to continue was just too high in my mind for what was now a five year old coach. It turns out, most of the expensive repairs, so far, were made under the warranty. Our costs since then have been very reasonable.

If a major failure of a engine causing putting in a new or rebuild at 30-40 grand would bankrupt you or cause you to make years more payments on a coach you can’t use .. then a “warranty” may be a good idea. It’s like all insurance , you have it to cover major costs .. not minor maintenance items.
I would guess 10 year old coach would be several thousand a YEAR. Call wholesale warranties who fairly brokers these .. you’ll get the straight info. IMO

Exactly why I bought an extended warranty. I could handle one maybe two major problems, but more than that and I would be out of the Class A DP business. However, it has been nice to have it replace a tankless water heater, a roof A/C unit, a Whirlpool washer, a rear and side camera's and monitor, a radio/gps system. All that plus I still have coverage for a potential major breakdown.
  • It is not an extended warranty but a service contract. Ask for a list of everything that is not covered. Some state that if a no covered part damages a cover part then there is no coverage.

  • You'd be surprised what these warranties don't cover. A friend had his gelcoat split and it wasn't covered ($1500 repair). His motor went out on an awning and it wasn't covered. I don't have an extended warranty, I do my own repairs.
  • After much research we purchased an extended warranty from Wholesale Warranties and have been very pleased with the results. As a previous person noted they are not cheap, but so far we are way ahead on an annual basis. Highly recommend an "exclusionary" policy where they list the things they don't cover ie, paint, tires, etc and everything else is covered. Also with this type of policy they also cover diagnostics. Not all policies do. Also request a "Consequential Loss". This is where if one item fails and causes damage to another item, it will cover that also. You have to request this, it is not part of regular policy, it's another $100, well worth it. Wholesale Warranties customer service has been excellent. Phone calls answered or returned promptly, approval of claims has been fast and easy. I have had a couple mechanics tell me they did not deal with warranty companies, until I told them Wholesale Warranties then they said ok, thats a good company.
With a 7-10 year old coach a lot of the appliances can go at any time. It doesn't take long to pay for the warranty, plus you still have coverage if anything major like engine or transmission problems come along.

You will find that many members think Extended Warranties are a waste of money. Some feel they are a good investment.
Before you sign any agreements or give them any money, ask for a copy of the policy.

You need to see everything that is excluded from coverage. It may change your mind.
Possibly if one part fails they will replace the part but, will not cover any damage from the failed part.
(If a transmission plug falls out, they may replace the plug but will not cover the damage to the transmission from no fluid.)
Read the policy carefully. If they refuse to give you a copy, that should help you decide.

Personally, I never buy extended warranties. But, some like them for the peace of mind.
  • nine year old unit, it will very pricey, we don,t buy them ,find the price of one, then laugh a good one, then put back some money for emg, and go from there .
  • If you find a repair insurance policy available, read it carefully, twice. Warranties are only available from manufacturers.
