I wouldn't call any of them stupid, most are just scared. Again, I manage a drug store and I have personally had to intervene when elderly customers come in and purchase ITunes cards or Money Dot cards. Many of these victims are threatened, are told they're being given watched, their family will be hurt etc.
My local PD gets called and they help the victim. Unfortunately once the money is gone it's gone. Many of scammers are from out of the country on a throw away phone and will never be caught. On average 1 in 10 of the phone calls ends up with money in the scammers pocket.
The best thing we can do is to educate our elderly parents, friends and neighbors about this.
