This original property owner allowed us to share rental space for a
weekend of high desert RV camping....

Bride says.. "don't worry , it's dead , move it along".Tapped it with a twig...
sprung out to its' full hairy glory.
Wing span a little larger then my palm. It covered
ground quickly. I slept with one eye open.;)

ever wonder how many we don't see ? :B (BTW...I'm told these are harmless, awesome..but harmless.)

I, for one, hope that 4-5 foot jump is urban mythology... perhaps sticking my cell phone in for an up close and personal spidey selfie wasn't such a good idea. My arms are a little short of 4-5 foot.:S

...then again... I only have to have response time faster then my bride ! :B

p.s. nope....not going to try the nekkid with a tarantula maneuver if I can help it. Have to take your word on that one.. :h

Want to know something else about tarantulas? They can JUMP. Yep, I've seen them jump 4 to 5 feet in one leap. They tickle when you let them walk around on your bare skin too. I've never been bitten but they are definitely not deadly. I have heard their bite can be painful. I've seen tarantulas as big as 6" diameter in my back yard and they usually just sit and watch me while I watch them. We also have rattlesnakes and big scorpions. Welcome to New Mexico.

We saw one of those Jeeps and thought the EXACT same thing as others here. The first thing that came to mind was Dead Cartoon characters with the X eyes. 😄

..in my never ending quest for knowledge...apparently,there is,
out there in the ether,an American Tarantula Society. Like RV'er's
they have a forum, like Rv'er's they wax philosophic on the finer
points of RV, er, arachnid love. Many topics on "molt", "keeping as pets",
"climbing glass", "walking on water", "shipping", etc. :E

..no , really. :B

fun fact (un-cited) a famous Italian Opera singer enjoyed eating the
Tarantula... apparently tasted like shrimp. :R

Hot weather comes and we have scorpions and rattle snakes. No big deal, the scorpions are the little ones and we haven't been bitten yet although I have stepped on a few.

Watch out those Brown Tarantulas have been known to climb into trailers and have their young. They get in to the trailer through any opening, including frame opening for slide outs, landing gear, and they slide under the rubber seals for slideouts.

Make sure you check your slippers when you first get up in the morning.

When I was Camp Director at a Boy Scout Camp, I'd find tarantulas and put them on the brim of my scout hat (campaign hat, wide brim all the way around). They would stay up there, as they don't want to jump off as they don't like the fall!

Scouts would walk up to me and I'd play like I didn't know it was there. Got some pretty fun responses.
