Double towing

I did a search and didnt really find what I was looking for. I have a 2000 22' Terry Bumper pull trailer. I also have a 9' echo atv trailer. I want to pull a couple ATV's behind my TT there is a receiver hitch that someone attached to the bumper on the TT my question is that suitable for towing another trailer or is that more of a cargo rack type set up? Do I need to have something that is beefier installed? I would love to see pics of your hitches set up for towing double and hear what you pull and how far. I will not be pulling double further than about 100 miles and yes its legal in my state of Wyoming. This is mostly for hunting so a trip up the mountain is about as far as I will be going.

Most any competent welder could attach a 2" receiver to your frame.

Running lights and brakes to the second trailer are also doable.

Be sure you end up with enough tongue weights to eliminate possible sway, and have fun.

Not exactly what you want, but similar: utube Truck towing trailer, towing Jeep

I liked this comment after the video:

"This type of tow IS NOT legal in any state."

Sorry, fella, but that just is not true! I can't prove it is not true (AFAIK it is legal in Montana), but then I doubt anybody can show the statutes from each of the 50 states that would make it illegal, either.

It has already been stated that towing doubles in Wyoming is LEGAL (just as it is in Montana).
IIRC, the first trailer does not have to be a fifth wheel in Wyoming (it doesn't in Montana).
The second trailer MAY have to have brakes capable of being controlled by the driver. (it does in Montana, although a lot of second trailers don't)
AFAIK, California is the ONLY state that requires a CDL Class A with Doubles Endorsement to tow recreational doubles. Supposedly, so I have read, that is because that is the only license issued in CA that can have a Doubles Endorsement put on it!
YES, a good strong receiver hitch must be bolted or welded to the frame of the first trailer. YES, there must be provisions for lighting the second trailer.
Check the Wyoming laws regarding trailer brakes. It may be that the second trailer must have brakes, regardless of weight. It may also be that the brakes on the second trailer must be capable of being controlled by the driver independent of the first trailer's brakes. Also, check the maximum length of a truck/trailer/trailer combo in Wyoming. In Montana it is 75 feet, but I don't know about WY.
DO NOT trust ANY list of towing laws that you might find on the internet. EVERY one of them I have looked at is inaccurate! The actual laws are readily available at the WY GOV website. I have researched the MT laws regarding towing, but I have not looked at the WY laws, since I don't live there anymore.
Good luck in your research and in your towing.

I dont know how to post pics but I did this with a Pop Up and a jet ski behind that. Worked well, one suggestion is to watch your speed, for me more than 65 mph things would start moving around. I added a sway control to the Pop Up and it solved the issue. So adding a good sway control to the camper and the small trailer will keep things straight especially in Wyoming with your winds. Like others have said watch your tongue weights on both items. Remember to take your time!

And some states require you to have a CDL. Also, don't forget that loading weight on the back of the TT (tongue weight of the 2nd trailer), will decrease the tongue weight of the TT which in turn may cause a sway condition.

I understand that you have a "Curt" weight distribution unit and I assume that it doesn't have any sway control built in to it. Do you have a separate sway control device or none at all? If your WD unit doesn't have built in sway control, before you attach a 2nd trailer, I highly recommend that you purchase and install a WD unit that does...ie: Reese Dual Cam or Equi-i-zer (brand name). If you have the bucks, a Hensley Arrow or Pro Pride will be the ultimate in sway control.

Check your state's laws on double towing before you go to any expence.

Good luck

Some jurisdictions allow double towing ONLY if the first tow is a fifth wheel. Other jurisdictions don't allow double towing at all. You need to do you your homework. As far as the hitch that is there, I would not trust it and would have it inspected/assessed by someone in the fabrication business.

Stay away from freeways and fast moving 18 wheelers passing you with that setup, it could give interesting results!

IMO you should not use a bumper mounted hitch for pulling another trailer. It is not strong enough for that. Have a hitch mounted/welded to the frame of your trailer.
And be ready for comments about whether you should double tow with a bumper pull trailer. Just be sure you can do that in your state and be safe.
I have been double towing since 1997 but with a 5th wheel and a boat.

I will edit the post thanks

You need to check the laws regarding double towing. Many states do not allow the towing of more than one trailer.

The hitch on the back bumper is not secure enough as is to tow with.. A reinforced hitch mounted to the frame is necessary.

Good luck!

The receiver hitch must be attached to the frame of the TT & not just the bumper.
