East Coast Camping in April

Boston is 25 mins away, Newport about 45mins, Providence 30 mins, and Cape Cod 45mins.

Boston is a minimum of 35 minutes away with no traffic. Plan on at least 45 minutes and at the wrong time it can be an hour or more. Newport is an hour and 10 minutes minimum-again, all bets are off with traffic. Providence is correct at about 30 minutes, assuming no real traffic issues. Sandwich is the upper Cape and that's an hour away. to reach the tip (Provincetown) plan on over two hours.

Don't let the traffic scare you off-just plan accordingly. April's weather is unpredictable but usually is a bit wet and on the cool side. However, if we have an early spring it can be gorgeous. Just be aware that the week of 4/17 is April vacation here and the campground will be very busy, if not already booked.

Try Normandy Farms in Foxboro, Mass. They open April 1 and have a heated indoor pool with two hot tubs and steam sauna and 1100 sites. only 37 sites left for the seven days before Easter. Boston is 25 mins away, Newport about 45mins, Providence 30 mins, and Cape Cod 45mins. We are in site 517 april 7 till april 14 come say HI if your there, OILCAN.

Sorry to hear about your Bowie memorial being canceled. Did you make Mike Garson's "Celebrating David Bowie Tour"? I've been watching the video's of Adrian Belew singing "DJ" ...very cool.

Well I agree with the others that Assateague Island would be nice that time of year. The mosquitos are horrid there in the summer. Have the sticker and scars to prove it. :)

Much agreement from my end. Hammo's and Rocky Neck's revenue would appear to capably fund the remaining 9 parks. Hammo has been upgraded a lot the last few years: cabins and more electrified sites in Dowd's BUT at the same time there appears to be less patrolling of the park's perimeter. Now that the greenway has been built up outside the park I kind of worry about the ease that outsiders can enter. Last year the kids figured out how to enter the park w/o detection and I suspect others can work it out as well. Oh and the lack of lifeguards at the point of Beach Rd dinna sit well w/ me either.

As for Devil's Hopyard...it's closing could have been prevented by upgraded the facility. The well water pump was quaint but the trailer stye bathroom looked like......House on Haunted Hill meets the Nightmare on Elm Street. It was quite convenient to the shore, has a totally different topography and should have been a natural instead of party central for bachelor parties and uhmmmm...David Bowie Memorial celebrations Yeah. The one I was organising was cancelled by the closing but a smaller group was able to move it upstate NY instead. Still it left a bad taste in my mouth.

This year, decided it was time to move on after 9 straight yrs of fall and summer camping in CT and revisit NYS' campgrounds. It won't really be cheaper since the lower NYS resident daily camping fee ($18.00 vs 35.00 in CT) will be offset by the need to rent a boat AND car (sigh) yet I hope the locale and friends met are as memorable as our times in CT.

Here's hoping the govt of CT can join the 20th century (Yess I KNOW what century we are in ;)) and put a "lock" on the box and remove the state parks' revenues from the general allocations.

Last closing I'm aware of was due to a hurricane but I do know that some years back the govt cut out all advertising for a few years. Last year at least 2 campgrounds were closed permanently; Devil's Hopyard was one of them.

Spring is the time to start chasing after Stripers. Look for a campground near the mouth of the Connecticut River and book a charter. The stripers chase the bait fish up the river and there is some really nice fishing to be found even from a kayak. Beware of all State Campgrounds I would not depend on them being open this year. Gov A-hole spent all his beans on a bus to no-where and is threatening to close the parks to save $$$.
