Electric Trailer Brake Question
I am new to RVs and recently took possession of a new Montana 3790RD fifth wheel RV. The 3790RD is rated at 13K pounds dry and the CAT scales gave me a trailer axle weight of just under 11,000 pounds. The RV has dual Dexter 7,000 pound axles and both axles have electric brakes. My tow vehicle is a 2015 RAM 3500 Cummins with rear air suspensions and factory brake controller. I have the truck/RV set up level. I also performed the brake adjustments on the RV and found the brakes adjusted properly.
I do not feel the trailer brakes are working properly, that is, I do not feel a great amount of braking effort from the trailer. I have the brake controller set to heavy brakes (as opposed to light <10K lbs) with the gain set to the maximum. On a gravel road, manually applying full electric brakes, the RV wheels will not lock up, all I feel is a slight drag. There is no braking effort difference felt if the RV brakes are hot or cold.
This is my first experience towing a heavy trailer. I have an 18 foot flat bed trailer I use for towing my tractor, around 7200 pounds, and the brakes on the flat bed trailer will lock up.
How much braking effort should I expect from the trailer brakes of a 13,000 pound RV? Should I be able to lock the wheels on gravel? Am I experiencing normal braking for this weight? Before I talk with Chrysler or Keystone, I want to know what to expect from the brakes, it is possible they are working as designed. Thanks in advance for any input.
