Fires in Colorado Springs and surrounding areas

I am posting this in a few other RV forums as well. Sorry, when I post URL links, they don't always work so rather than complain, just copy and paste in your URL bar if you'd like to navigate to the link..

I have family and friends in the Colorado Springs Black Forest area. My sister, who lives 3 miles West of there, near Flying Horse CC, has been evacuated to my niece's (her daughter's) home in Monument and I have not heard from my daughter who lives in Peyton, a couple of miles East of the fires. Much help is needed there, people have been evacuated from their homes, pets and horses have been turned loose and even some of the designated safe shelters are in danger from smoke or fire. Over 300 homes are gone as of today (6/13). We are too far away to help, but there may be others who can assist in some way, maybe with a place to park an RV or keep livestock or pets. Here is a facebook link for those who "facebook":

Thanks and prayers for those involved in this fire.
  • A friend of mine that I went to high school with (class of 62) lost his home in the Black Forest fire. He also lost a SUV and a new 60th anniversary Corvette with 6000 miles on it. He was awakened yesterday in the middle of the night and had less than an hour to evacuate. He was so shook up, he failed to take hardly anything with him except a few days change of clean clothes. He'd lived there for over 35 years and is completely wiped out. At least he got out with no ill physical effects except for stress and high anxiety..!
  • As always - the RED Cross is helping at the evacuation centers and they do appreciate your financial assistance.
We also have friends in the pre-evacuation area and a daughter and family just outside that zone!
  • It has been reported 2 people have burned and died in the Black Forest fire. I grew up in Colorado Springs and I am going back a wk from today. It will be sad to see the forest burned out.

My heart and prayers go out to all the one who have lost animals and homes in the fires.

  • Sorry for the folks that were burned out.
Too bad there are looters already. If they disappear, they won't be missed.
  • To those wanting to help, please take note:

Law enforcement asks you to stay out of the area, especially around Black Forest. We need to keep the roads clear for evacuees and emergency equipment.

Lots of "looky-loos" making a bad traffic situation even worse.

  • Colorado has been hit by four fires, the Big Meadow fire up at Rocky Mountain National Park, the Black Forest fire north of Colorado Springs, the Royal Gorge fire west of Canyon City, and a fire in Huerfano County near La Veta.
  • I am so sorry to hear about the fires. My thoughts and prayers go out to those affected.

About the thieves, I read in our local paper the other day that they arrested some people from New Jersey that had driven to Moore OK where they had the terrible tornado. They were stealing copper wire from the destroyed houses. Dirtbags!
  • Has anyone heard about the fires at the Royal Gorge? Are they affecting any of the campgrounds there? There are a lot of campgrounds in that area. I usually stay at the Royal View Campground at Royal Gorge. It sounds like there are several fires popping up in Co. I hope they get them under control soon or they burn themselves out. Got to feel sorry for all the people in the area. Here's wishing you all the best.
  • It's pretty bad. Sheriff said this morning that 360 homes are totally destroyed, and there are 79 that they couldn't assess. Once they count those, this fire will be worse than last year's Waldo Canyon Fire...worst in Colorado history.

Glad I have an RV! We grabbed all the irreplaceable things and set up the RV about 20 miles up the road. Just popped back home to reset the sprinklers and such.

It's really amazing to see how the community comes together in times like this. Of course, there have already been thieves breaking into evacuees cars, too.

Making a link is easy. Quote this post to see the syntax.

I was in the Co Springs area yesterday, and the northbound I-25 traffic was 16 miles of stop and go. Evidently evacuees. Not fun...but nothing compared to losing your house.
