It especially references a study done by CSU Professor William Jacobi about campers who bring in firewood, especially campers from out of state to our state and National campgrounds. I was surprised that a study they did showed 39 percent of surveyed campers in 13 National Parks in Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming brought firewood from another state with them. There are more interesting facts to read but if the link works please read it and realize what can happen by bringing in your own firewood from somewhere else. It is a very interesting article about the dangers to our forests by bringing in firewood from somewhere else.

We have switched to using a propane fire ring in order to help prevent this kind of problem. It burns pretty clean and warm, and keeps the FW and our clothes from stinking like smoke. Another nice feature is that when there is high fire danger and a burn ban in our Arizona forests, you can still use propane.

I'm curious -- how do they KNOW we bring firewood from another state????? How do they know the people didn't stop and buy it? Has anyone been surveyed????

We never travel with wood, we buy when we get there, and if we leave before it is all used, we will leave it piled beside out campfire and tell someone close that we know just came in, to go over and help themselves to some free fire wood. People are always happy and thankful, brings a smile to someone elses face. To many creepy crawlies being taking from one place to another, and you really don't want the extra weight do you? We have also purchased a little propane fire like another posted mentioned.

When I camped in Arcadia NP last year with the G kids they had signs up about the beetles and what they did was to cut down the infected trees into 20 in logs and created a large pile for campers to take as much as they wanted for free. I thought that someone was thinking and it was a good way to kill the bugs and have a campfire at the same time.

It is the same thing with forest fires.
Remember, "Only YOU can prevent forest fires!"
But, 75 to 80% of wildfires are lightning caused!
That does NOT mean that you can be careless with fire in the woods!

No. I only transport it short distances. Even if I wanted to bring it with me, it would be a pain to load up 2 weeks worth of wood! No, I buy it when I get there. just tired of hearing "it`s the campers that transport the bug", when in reality it`s nature doing the destruction! I know it`s easier to point fingers, because you can`t put a ban on nature! people have to put blame on someone, mostly because they feel better believing they have fixed the problem by blaming a group of people!

You are correct, but at a much slower pace. That is like saying no one should be vaccinated against polio, measles etc. because there will still be some disease out there anyway.

You take this tactic every time the topic of transporting firewood comes up. You're free to rationalize your irresponsibility anyway you want, of course. I just find it ironic that a camper, especially one that likes to burn a lot of wood, is not concerned about deforestation.

Does anyone remember the large Elm trees that used to line our streets? What about the Chestnut trees? Tree infestation is a major concern today and we should be aware of our habits or desires and understand the unforeseen consequences of our decisions. Think about your choices and do your part to preserve nature.

I found one campground that had a good deal on firewood. It's small country in VA. 6 dollars for a arm full and they say arm full you can use both arms and have someone load you up till you can't see. All the wood was well seasoned and split small so it burns fast.

I usually camp in the state I live in and do load my truck down with fire wood. I do have a little propane fire setup but that's no campfire in comparison to a real campfire. My family and the ones we camp with look forward to a campfire at night and in the early spring and fall I've had a fire all day.....

Dodge guy said it best, cg wood is usually green and hard to get going not to mention expensive. I keep a couple cords of wood behind my shed just for camping and the occasional use of the fire pit at home.
