Well my first hurricane.I am right on the edge of the evacuation area of Cedar Key.Just bought a winter home in Florida. It needed a roof badly and I was proactive going into contract with a roofer. Only thing is he stiffed me on the start date. So here I sit with a roof that is till in need to be replaced in the middle of a hurricane. Praying it will stay on in 75 mile an hour plus winds.:(Being a Northerner I always said the Floridians had it made. They get weeks of prior notice of a pending hurricane and pretty good prediction of exactly when it will hit. Plenty of time to prepare and/or leave. Compared to us when a F5 Tornado hits we got maybe 10 minutes notice and more often than not zero notice.Well as I sit here 'waiting' for the pending doom. I've changed my mind how well off the Floridans have it. The anxiety level of just sitting and waiting for it to hit is unbearable.Prayers go out to all my fellow Floridians in the path of hurricane Hermine. Hope everyone stays safe. :C

Its supposed to hit us tomorrow night and most folks around here are quite happy. We need the rain.

As a native Floridian, I've lived through 4 hurricanes. Donna came in 1960 when I was 10, so of course, I remember it as an adventure as we played cards into the morning and had good food to eat. Things were a mess for a few weeks afterward, but we made it through it. We were in Charley, Frances, & Jeanne in 2004 and sustained no damage. Nor did my family, and we didn't lose power for any extended time. I certainly don't want to make light of it, as there were those who didn't fare as well, but you'll be fine. If you sustain any damage, it can be fixed. Just make sure you have the usual - batteries, flashlight,camp stove, jugs of water, fill the bathtub with water, canned goods-beenie weenies, soup, etc., charcoal for grilling, ice. And, fill up your car.Will be thinking of you. Hang in there and ride it out.

Little late to be shopping for those items now. As far as the contract for the roof, good move.

I wasn't aware of that death until reading this post. You have to wonder why he didn't seek shelter.

By all accounts, the storm was pretty minor. I know some folks who live in that Cedar Key area (and are lifelong residents), and they more/less brushed it off. Storm surge is what did the most damage, but that's kind of an inevitable fact of life when you're building homes/structures at ground level within eyeshot of the ocean (or in some cases, edge of the ocean). As is the case with many small coastal towns in our region, the residents are mostly folks who moved from somewhere else and only have a very short history (15 years or less) of living there.

But thankfully we have 24/7 news media that never seems to fail to make every incident seem like the worst thing that's ever happened.

One homeless guy in Ocala got killed from a tree that fell on his tent during the storm. On the local news every night there are reports about the huge clean up and the devastating effects from the storm. Churches and organizations are pitching in to help feed people. The place, Cedar Key, looks like a bomb went off. It might be awhile before things get close to normal. So sad...

Lots of people took heavy damage, but I'm not aware of anyone in FL who was killed or significantly injured as a result of the storm.

We haven't heard from rockhillmanor since the evening the storm hit his area. I am concerned for his safety and what may have happened to him during/after the storm.

The towns we're all familiar with along the Big Bend coast got trashed. The campground that we were planning on being for the weekend got trashed. We saw an aftermath picture the next morning of the flooded campground, with the water level just below the floors of some normal size 5er's. I read reports of watering coming up into the campers some 6" to 12", electrical systems being fried, etc. The campground has cabins (mobile homes), and they were flooded as well. As of Sunday, they had no power and no phones.

Our house in Sopchoppy is only 20 miles from St.Marks where the hurricane came ashore and we are on the river. We were sweating it out here in Kansas talking to my son (who lives across the street) all night. The river flooded but did not come in the house and all is well. lizzie
