I think many are discussing the sliding plate type that can be held open and the slot where the plate slides easily accessed and cleaned. Yours sounds like the ball shaped seal that rolls in and out of position to seal. You'll probably have to do a seal kit on this type to fix it.

Mine IS the curved ball........8 yrs old.
Clean it once a year and lube it.
Is it time for your medication or mine?

Last summer I replaced the seal & blade and used it as an opportunity to clean the toilet guts. This was a 13 year old toilet that was new to use and I used more cleaners and bleach that I ever have on anything else in my life. It was disgusting, but a pretty easy job. You can also try the seal lube, but if cleaning the seal doesn't work I wouldn't hesitate to replace the parts.

Give the above efforts a try. If it doesn't work, just replace the seal. If you have a Thetford, the seal kit is more like $15 not $35. On min Style II, no matter what I do, it is a consumable that fails and gets replaced about every 2 years.

Mine came with one of those disposable finger nail file things that has a sand paper like material on each side. Directions said to use that to clean under the edge of the rubber seal if it starts leaking water.

You cannot make it drink.

Your hands.........

Seriously. Using your hands scrub the seal thoroughly top/bottom/sides with dish soap flexing seal as you clean/rub it.
Then rinse while rubbing seal with your hand.

A tongue depressor/Popsicle stick works well for gently scraping off any residue/calcium

Don't forget to clean ball also.....old toothbrush works for scrubbing it clean

Then rub seal using hand with olive oil.

NOTE: Water turned off while cleaning/oiling. Just have a bucket of warm water handy
