While federal officials say the multimillion-dollar civil penalties imposed on Forest River RV this week are meant to make an example of the company, they also hope they can use the settlement to set a positive example for manufacturers in the future.

Consider for a minute who owns Forest River(Warren Buffett):

It would have been pointless for the government to have gone after any other RV manufacturer because they would not have been able to pay. Sometimes big companies get fleeced because who ever is after their money or has a motive; knows they can pay up.

The actual fine was $5 million....

The other $30 million was 'deferred' (don't have to pay)

Pocket change for ANY large corporation

Besides gov't went after FR because it wasn't reporting/recalling safety issues.......fire hazards from wiring and CO hazards becasue of NO exhaust vents

Hardly being 'fleeced'---should have been required to pay full $35 million

  • Part of the settlement/agreement is that FR go out and promote how to best 'report safety data' to gov't.

See they didn't do it correctly, got caught, fines and now are to be the industry leaders in proper reporting.

Where I worked Corporate called it a 'gesture of goodwill'----we working folks called it 'hogwash'

It would be nice if the RV industry started paying attention to quality control.
But, as long as we're willing to buy junk, they'll keep producing junk.

X2 Amen. They will only produce what we will buy.
